P.B. No. 517, Frazer Town, Bangalore – 560 005
PRESS RELEASE
Dear Sir,
Sub: GCIC Condemns Selective Arrest of Evangelist William Lee
Global Council of Indian Christians (GCIC) condemns the selective arrest of Evangelist William Lee for participating in a Musical Concert in Kaloor Stadium in Cochin, Kerala on Thursday, 13-10-2011. The Police arrested Evangelist Lee on Friday night 14-10-11, allegedly for breaking the visa norms and propagating religious sermons. He would be produced before the Ernakulam First Class Magistrate Court on Saturday.
It is an open fact that hundreds of tourists from abroad visit India and get actively involved in various religious programs and public discourses in public places, organized by godmen and women, promoting a particular religion. Such people are never touched and are allowed to go on doing whatever they wish to do without any restraints or objections from any quarters in our secular country, India.
Reports from various sources also indicate that Evangelist William Lee was being hunted like a terrorist, to please the 'Right wing terrorists' of India. Lee had only participated in indoor musical program organized by Faith Leaders Church of Lord, Tiruvalla. The police had interfered in a prayer meet at Kaloor. A case has been also booked against other members - Daniel Mathew, Roy Daniel and James. The group had entered India on a tourist visa.
Those entering on tourist visas are prohibited from conducting any religious prayer sessions. But, then, do such norms apply only to Christian prayers? Are Bhajans and other public discourses are exempted from the ambit of Visa regulations for others? The moral policing, sectarian violence and the selective arrest of Christian evangelists, demonstrate very clearly a failure of secular institutions in India. Incidentally, the authorities also seem to have been in a terrible haste to announce to the media that Evangelist Lee would be blacklisted from visiting India! GCIC also condemns the media trial and denial of natural justice. In the meantime the GCIC appeals to all secular forces to see the grand designs of the fascist forces corroding the roots of democratic India.
We would be very thankful if you could kindly give the necessary publicity and oblige.
Thanking you,
Yours faithfully,
For Global Council of Indian Christians
(Dr. Sajan K. George)
National President
It was not a selective
It was not a selective arrest just because he was on a tourist visa. The authority knew that he was on a Tourist visa before. Remember, Ron Kenoly was on the same stage. And he didn't have any problem. The police said, "We won't allow William Lee to preach gospel". When Ron Kenoly and his team was singing, William Lee was also on the stage and even he was singing with them. The police were there. They didn't make any problem. But when William Lee started preaching gospel, they interfered the meeting.
William Lee
Philip. 1:12-26 (KJV)
But I would ye should understand, brethren, that the things which happened unto me have fallen out rather unto the furtherance of the gospel; [13] So that my bonds in Christ are manifest in all the palace, and in all other places; [14] And many of the brethren in the Lord, waxing confident by my bonds, are much more bold to speak the word without fear. [15] Some indeed preach Christ even of envy and strife; and some also of good will: [16] The one preach Christ of contention, not sincerely, supposing to add affliction to my bonds: [17] But the other of love, knowing that I am set for the defence of the gospel. [18] What then? notwithstanding, every way, whether in pretence, or in truth, Christ is preached; and I therein do rejoice, yea, and will rejoice. [19] For I know that this shall turn to my salvation through your prayer, and the supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ, [20] According to my earnest expectation and my hope, that in nothing I shall be ashamed, but that with all boldness, as always, so now also Christ shall be magnified in my body, whether it be by life, or by death. [21] For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. [22] But if I live in the flesh, this is the fruit of my labour: yet what I shall choose I wot not. [23] For I am in a strait betwixt two, having a desire to depart, and to be with Christ; which is far better: [24] Nevertheless to abide in the flesh is more needful for you. [25] And having this confidence, I know that I shall abide and continue with you all for your furtherance and joy of faith; [26] That your rejoicing may be more abundant in Jesus Christ for me by my coming to you again.
We will be praying for this dear brother and expecting his immediate release.

free the man
I 'm concern for this mans safety. I would like to know what is being done to get him out of India. This is an direct persecution against the man of God. Saints we must pray for his deliverance and that no harm come to him.
Dear Sajan, We should
Dear Sajan,
We should respect our country's rules and regulation. Ours is an decmocratic country and all have the freedom to do religious things but we need to get the permission. This is applicable for Hindus, christians and Muslims. you cannot straight away say that the arrest is to to please the 'Right wing terrorists' of India. Tht is wrong...
The organisers should have taken permission to conduct the meeting.
My question is why he escaped from the premise and went hiding? According to the news:
“The pastor then agreed to cooperate with the police. The police team fell for his nice manners and didn't physically detain him. Taking advantage of the situation, Lee escaped. Though the police rushed to the hotel where he had been put up, they found his room empty. “
Is this the right way?? May be I am wrong infront of other but this is my feeling.
If he had only a tourist
If he had only a tourist visa, he should not have preached or addressed any meeting - it is that simple. Was Lee or the main organizer that stupid or ignorant????? There is nothing unfair in this. There is no point in saying that, the arrest was selective. If Lee broke the law, he broke the law - that is all. Saying his arrest is selective is like saying, "There were other drivers, as well, who were speeding; but, the police stopped and gave a ticket only to me!" The question is whether you broke the law, or not. There may be others, in other religions or faith, that come here on tourist visa, but, attend religious meetings. But, how many of them do preach or address any such gathering????
