GCIC strongly condemns the attack on Christian Karens on July 23rd in, Tha Dah Der village, Karen State, Burma
Burma Army soldiers shelled Tha Dah Der village with mortar rounds before burning the village to the ground destroying nearly burning 50 homes, a school and a church.
No human casualties were reported as over 600 villagers fled as the army advanced.
Villagers from the neighboring villages have also abandoned their homes in fear to seek refuge in the jungle.
On 22nd July, a day prior to the attack on Christians in Burma, GCIC had petitioned the Indian Prime Minister for Restoration of Human Rights in Burma (Myanmar)
In a letter addressed to Dr Manmohan Singh, GCIC expressed anguish about the official visit of General Than Shwe to India as he does not represent the 50 million peoples of Burma, but instead represents only the military regime that has been culpable in mass atrocities and many systematic international crimes.
