Vikram Rai is an Asst. Prof of Journalism and Mass Communication ,St. Joseph college arrested in midnight raid
Darjeeling, June 17:
Vikram Rai is an Asst. Prof of Journalism and Mass Communication at the prestigious St. Joseph's College. He is a reputed journalist in the hill area. He had been managing media on behalf of GTA. Is that the only reason behind this arrest?- the question has been raised in the area. When Darjeeling is totally at civil and political unrest, these kinds of sudden arrests may lead to more violent protest.
“The police barged into our house at around 12:30 AM, and arrested Vikram... he is not a criminal, nor is he associated with any violence, we are not sure why he was picked up like a terrorist at midnight... his two baby daughters and wife are still in a state of shock as they were witness to this traumatic arrest of their father.”, his family told to local media.
The inability to solve a problem cannot be suppressed by a forceful police torture. Freedom of the press is under threat in West Bengal since long days. Recently during CPIM’s Nabanna March, journalists were brutally attacked. Again Bengal witnessed a repetition of violation of freedom of expression. Mr. Vikram Rai, who is a media executive with the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration, has been arrested by Police. Police conducted a midnight raid at his house and arrested him.
He is the son of current Darjeeling MLA Amar Rai who went to meet Bengal Governor Keshar Nath Tripathi. Though the reason of arrest is not clear to anyone, "arrested in connection with the June 8th incident under which previous arrests were done."
